Sad and a tragedy that the Tories decimated not just british manufacturing, but our once massive historic maritime ship building too. Where a british ship now built in foreign yards 😖. Let's put it this way... Would the french, Italians or the Spaniards build their prestigious ship of national pride in a foreign yard.. No it would not happen!

I was quite excited to watch this but as an engineer myself many red flags cropped up. A massive time crunch like this is extremely risky. Every assembly “section” has major weak spots at the joining. I heard a lot of “never before used” which makes me sweat a bit. God speed Queen Mary 2..

The captain of the QM2 looks ironically similar to Captain Edward John Smith of TITANIC lol.

I'm surprised that the QM2 is profitable it burns more fuel per passenger than a 747. Three million liters is equivalent to roughly about 12 747-8s full of fuel to their maximum capacity. That being said the QM2 has a passenger capacity of 2,691 that is roughly 6 747-8 worth of passengers the (747-8 carries 467 passengers including business and first class seats if they were all economy it would be even more) and 6 747 and each 747-8 carries a maximum fuel capacity of 64,225 gallons of fuel. 64,000/12=770,000 or roughly 3 million liters so 12 747-8 worth of fuel that being said the passenger capacity of the QM2 only requires 6 747-8 or 5 747-8 plus a smaller more efficient two-engine aircraft aircraft like an a330 or 787-8. That's not to mention the fact that the 747-8 does not require the full 64,000 gallons of fuel to cross the Atlantic from London Heathrow to JFK for example roughly the same distance as Southampton to New York (the QM2 makes several stops like in France to pick up passengers before crossing the Atlantic so it kind of all evens out) that's just the maximum capacity meaning the plane can fly much further distances. each 747 would require only about 36,000 gallons for a ten-hour flight. That's also not to mention that a lot of airlines don't fly four-engine jets anymore like the 747 and a380 and there are replacement aircraft that can carry roughly the same amount of passengers as the 747 family like the 777-300er and the upcoming 777-9x aircraft so even lass fuel consumption. I'm guessing the tickets even the cheapest economy tickets must be very expensive and there's a lot of competition with the airline industry especially as nobody want's to travel a whole week across the Atlantic when they can do it for cheaper and faster on a jet. If you care about your carbon footprint you would take a jet. Even though the ship is moving a lot slower than an aircraft it still burns more fuel because of the sheer weight and the fact that being in the water the water resistance makes it really inefficient as compared to an aircraft flying at high altitude where the air is thinner then at sea level the drag is significantly less then moving though water. Likewise, the ship burns more fuel going slow then a jet does moving through thin air at 35,000 feet at 600 mph not to mention the ship having a lot more electrical systems to power than an aircraft. P.S Even with 12 747s carrying 467 passengers each totaling 5,604 passingers for a ten-hour flight they would all burn only 432,000 gallons of full altogether that's still less than the QM2 and keep in mind that New York's JFK to London Hethrow is only an 8-hour flight vice versa is usually a little bit longer of eight and a half hours but not ten so they would burn even less.

The most beautiful and biggest ship in the world. QM2 can be sailing across 25 to 40 ft swells in the North Atlantic Storms and she rides so smoothly you can hardly tell you are on her.

Just to point out: Micky Arison says he sailed on the Mauretania in 1954 when he emigrated to the US. Your video then incorrectly shows the four-funnelled RMS Mauretania, which was scrapped in 1935. Mr Arison sailed on it's successor, the two-funnelled RMS Mauretania launched in 1938.

Crazy that the gangway collapsed on the “open day” and took 16 people’s lives, not try to be superstitious about it, but I remember from one of the Titanic documentaries, 17 workers died during the construction of the Titanic, the casualty was soooo close to one another, not to mention it was the Cunard what ended up purchasing White Star Line after the Titanic disaster…

I expect this has been said sometime ago, but there was a bit of history they got wrong. Micky Arison mentioned coming to America as a child aboard the Mauretania. The ship that appeared the screen was incorrect. They showed the first Mauretania entered service in 1907 and was scrapped in 1937 just before Queen Mary took her place. Micky's ship was commonly known as second Mauretania and did sail in the 50s and beyond. She was built before WWII and served during war as a troopship before turning to passenger service. An old friend of mine noted that his father had gone to Europe with the army aboard 2nd Mauretania. I would usually expect better curatorial work from Nat Geo.

This documentary would have been more interesting without all of the idiotic "and then another problem arose" cases. It's an insult to the designers to imagine that they started a billion dollar vessel without thinking of everything ahead of the construction phase. This show suggests otherwise, only to create a stupid sense of urgency. Tell the real story. We don't need to be led along from one mini design disaster to the next.

Unrivalled luxury?! Massive overstatement. We were bitterly disappointed. The class system is prevalent on this ship. Steerage is rammed with Chinese who’ve paid peanuts, the middle cabins are very expensive but limit to where you can eat etc. the only luxury experience is in the ‘grill suites’. You have to pay extra for EVERYTHING. COVID is rife. Gala nights are merely where u just dress up, nothing else is laid on. Platinum Cunard members on our trip were shocked and disappointed. This ship is awesome to look at from a port. But the whole ‘nostalgia’ thing is a fallacy. It’s just a huge ferry!

he ship is getting old and boring. Just came back from 16 days Cunard. It degraded a lot. food quality and quantity BAD. especially at the Lido. Super short handed. It is at the Carnival cruise style. No dance host, no queens room Hostess, no professional dancer exhibition, etc. will not recommend for this price ( we are diamond on Cunard, not a newbie)
